The Importance of Breathing and Relaxation for Elementary School Teachers

Every day, elementary school teachers face a growing number of challenges: planning lessons, grading papers, organizing the classroom, attending meetings, making copies, managing student behavior, and so much more. With such a busy schedule, it can feel impossible to find time to relax, let alone practice breathing and relaxation techniques—both of which are essential for maintaining balance.

Without properly managing our bodies and minds, we can easily become overwhelmed by stress and anxiety. For teachers, this is especially concerning because their well-being directly impacts the learning environment they create for their students. If we don’t take a few moments each day to breathe and unwind, it’s not just our health that suffers, but the quality of our teaching as well.

Here are some tips that can help elementary school teachers incorporate relaxation and breathing exercises into their daily routine:

Take a Few Minutes in the Morning

Before the school day begins, find a quiet spot in your classroom or at home to sit for just five minutes. Close your eyes, take deep breaths, and focus on the sensation of air entering and leaving your body. This simple practice can set a positive tone for the rest of the day.

Use Breathing Breaks Between Activities

Between lessons or transitions, take a brief pause for yourself. Even one minute of focused breathing can help you reset your mind. You can even teach your students a quick breathing exercise to help them (and you!) calm down after a busy activity.

Try Progressive Muscle Relaxation

During your lunch break or whenever you can spare a moment, try progressive muscle relaxation. Start by tensing and then relaxing each muscle group, starting from your toes and working your way up to your head. This can reduce physical tension and promote a sense of calm.

Mindfulness During Recess

If you supervise recess, use that time to focus on your breathing while watching the students. Let yourself be present, noticing the sights and sounds around you, while taking slow, deep breaths.

Set a Reminder for Breathing Time

Use a phone app or a timer to remind yourself to take a few deep breaths throughout the day. This can help break the cycle of stress and tension before it escalates.
